The Buzz from Recent Weeks...Greetings Music & Dance Friends, the gigs/musician’s that have stood-out for me in the last little while have been:
Sally Stockwell's debut album launch party at The Wine Cellar on Friday 17th April was outstanding, supported by top musicians. Her album "Weightless" is great too !!! I've thrashed it to death, but still find myself playing it through maybe once a week !!! For more info visit: sallystockwell.com or facebook.com/sallystockwellsongs So glad we caught Bailey Wiley with Yoko Zuna band backing her Wednesday night (May 13th) at Ponsonby Social Club performing her Soul originals. She's off to Europe soon, so this might be the last we see of her for some time !!! But never fear, the fabulous Yoko Zuna band are active around town. If you haven't caught them yet, then you DEFINITELY need too !!! AceTones - an eclectic, Jamaican style, Ska-Reggae Collective have been around for a good while now, and have collected some more musicians for a fuller sound. Excellent night of old school ska and boss-reggae sounds to dance too !!! This was their debut appearance at Portland Public House in Kingsland's Village on Friday night (May 15th) .... but it definitely won't be the last after they brought the house down !!! Trinity Trio - violinist Stella Kim, cellist Sally Kim and pianist Tina Kim, showcased their incredible talents in the old Auckland Art Gallery on Sunday afternoon (May 17th). One of the most successful young chamber music groups from New Zealand, Trinity Trio have performed internationally in London, Scotland and Thailand. Keep an eye out for a concert around June/July, before they head to Europe for another tour !!! These young women are SERIOUSLY talented !!! Carnivorous Plant Society - a Finn Scholes project have been playing around town a bit recently including a gig at CJC Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa in 1885 Britomart's (Basement Bar) Wednesday last week (20th May) described as a Cinematic fantasy jazz with a Mexican twist. The Carnivorous Plant Society, led by trumpet and keyboard player (regularly even at the same time !!!) Finn Scholes, plays original music with wide ranging influences. Mexican mariachi mixes it up with futuristic sci-fi space sounds and spine chilling nuances drawn from Stephen King novels. The trumpet, bass, guitar, vibraphone, tuba, violin, synthesizers, organ and drums all have their say. Hand drawn animations help set the scene. Featuring: FInn Scholes (trumpet, keyboard, tuba), Siobhanne Thompson (vibraphone, violin, chains), Tam Scholes (guitar), Cass Mitchell (bass guitar) and Alistair Deverick (drums). If you haven't caught Carnivorous Plant Society, watch for an upcoming gig. Tyra Hammond EP Release Show @ Matterhorn (above Victoria Market) Saturday 20th June was everything we expected enhanced by the fabulous Jeremy Toy (guitar/tracks & EP Producer) & Chip Matthews (bass guitar) playing songs from the EP & more. Tyra released her first solo six-track EP in March. She describes it as a record with a bit of everything that she loves - funk, soul, hip-hop and afro-beat. Released online through band camp and iTunes the nation-wide response has been massively positive with consistent airplay across various radio stations of the first single 'So Good at Being in Trouble' - reaching no 1 in the radio charts for weeks. |
I was really impressed by a newly formed band called Round Buddah playing
"funky" Jazz instrumental numbers at the Fort Lane entrance of Imperial Lane Cafe/Bar, a couple of Friday's ago. Group features: Pavel Kazinets (sax), Sam Nash (bass guitar), Thom Taylor (keys) and Cam Insull (drums). I understand they played Alliance Française Music Festival at Galatos last Saturday night. Keep an "ear" out for these guys .. they've got a great sound !!! I thought Linn Lorkin's Bag of Tricks Quartet concert at Auckland Jazz & Blues Club (AJBC) Night at Pt Chevalier RSA on Tuesday 7th June was thoroughly entertaining and featured the fabulous Linn Lorkin (piano / vocals / song-writer), Peter Wood (vibrophone), Stuart Grimshaw (bass guitar) and Bryan Harris (drums & vocals on one or two numbers). And the amazing Hershal Herscher (accordion / piano) as special guest. They played a mix of Linn's originals (i.e. "Me and the Magician", "K Road" "Ponsonby Road Mambo", etc) plus standards and a French tune or two. Peter Wood on vibes was nothing short of amazing !!! If you missed this AJBC performance, then get yourself along on any Friday night to One2One Cafe, 121 Ponsonby Rd from aabout 8:30pm until late for Peter Wood's Jazz Jam Nite, featuring some fabulous musicians included the one's mentioned here. Always a great night! Yoko-Zuna Album Release Party at Ponsonby Social Club, last Wednesday night went well, even with a technical difficultly or two. After they had finished introducing the debut album tracks, we called for an encore, and were treated to a Rap performance by Bron-sun (Third Eye) and it looked like Yoko-Zuna could just "relax" and be free to back vocalists that they are so good at. Unfortunately, noise controls limits "killed" what would surely have turned into an awesome gig that we have become accustomed to expect from these awesome musicians !!! Oh, well, we'll just have to be sure to catch their next gig !!! The consolation to a slightly disappointing "release party" for me was their debut album titled "This Place Here" .... it's FANASTIC !!! Everything I expected and a true representation to the LIVE performances .... unlike a few albums I have purchased over the years ====================================================== As you can appreciate, at times I do struggle often to fully update this Gig Guide in one sitting on Monday nights, due to various other commitments on my time (which may even include catching a gig) but I try and keep at I least a couple of days ahead. The majority of the gigs/concerts listed in this Gig Guide are credited as being sourced from the Eventfinder website, however there are a number of other useful Gig Guide websites per list below, which I would encourage you to explore and even cross-check to verify gig information ......................: Useful Gig Guide website links:

Please support this event and help us to save this much-loved Wurlitzer pipe organ! After 32 years of calling the Hollywood Cinema in Avondale "home", we have been instructed to have the Wurlitzer pipe organ removed by September 30 as the building is on the market to be sold. So in an urgent bid to raise sufficient funds to have this historic pipe organ removed and safely stored pending a new home, we are presenting this second show featuring Jelani Eddington, the USA's leading exponent of this musical art form. Jelani Eddington will be presenting a short program of music that will showcase just how versatile an instrument the Wurlitzer organ really is! The show will feature the Main theme from "Star Wars" and other popular movie themes, some hits from today and a short silent movie comedy, this demonstrating the original reason for the Wurlitzer Company building these amazing pipe organs. For more info contact James on (09) 525 7067. Wurlitzer Organ Trust of Auckland. NOTE: Tomorrow's "Farewell to the Hollywood" show with Jelani Eddington, will feature a different program of music. Soloist: Sarah Spence Brahms - Serenade No. 2 in A major Conductor - Elizabeth Lau Be entranced by the music of Douglas Lilburn, 'the Grandfather of NZ Music', and be charmed by Haydn's Cello Concerto in C that was thought to have been lost for nearly two centuries, played by the brilliantly engaging cellist Sarah Spence. Before his celebrated symphonies, Brahms practised his craft in the form of his Serenades. His second serenade has an unusual scoring of double winds, violas, cellos, basses, but no violins, and is the first piece he's written with the sound of the orchestra in mind - indeed one can hear fragments of his Symphonies in the Serenade! Please join us for this special programme of 'Winter Soiree', and support Wairua Sinfonietta to support our community in our first fundraising concert. About Sarah Spence - Cello Sarah completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours at the Royal Northern College of Music studying under the principal cellist of the Royal Danish Symphony, Kim Bak Dinitzen. She went on to Duesseldorf to complete a Masters in Chamber Music at the Robert Schumann Musik Hochschule with Professor Gregor Horsch, principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Whilst in Germany, Sarah studied and performed with Germany’s leading contemporary ensemble, Musik Fabrik and also worked closely with German composer, Michael Denhoff, performing his pieces at various concert series in the NRW. In her years at the RNCM, Sarah studied Baroque cello with baroque specialist, Susan Shepherd and went on to perform with German Baroque ensemble, the Palm Concertino as soloist and continuo player. She has made various recordings with her group, the Eris Ensemble in Scotland and since arriving in NZ, has pursued her love of chamber music with newly formed Kulios Trio and Villani Quartet. Sarah feels extremely privileged to perform with the Wairua Sinfionetta as principal cellist and even more so, to be asked as a soloist, she looks forward to growing with the ensemble well into the future. About Wairua Sinfonietta Founded in July 2014, Wairua Sinfonietta is a unique Auckland-based orchestra made up of established musicians, university music performance graduates and emerging artists who are embarking on their music career. VARIETY CONCERT Farewell to the Hollywood - Final Wurlitzer Pipe Organ Show @ Hollywood Cinema, 20 St Georges Rd, Avondale. Tickets 09 522 8944. Show is almost sold out!! R13. GA $25. 2 - 4:45pm We are devastated to have to bring you this news. The Hollywood Cinema in Avondale that has been home to Auckland's historic 1926 Wurlitzer pipe organ for 32 years, is on the market to be sold as "land & buildings" only and we have been instructed to remove the Wurlitzer organ by September 30!! If you have ever seen the Town Hall pipe organ, you will know that we are not talking about a keyboard and some loud speakers. The Wurlitzer is of a similar size but with the addition of a large percussion section of drums, cymbals, glockenspiels etc and will be a monumental task to dismantle, find storage for and then hunt for a new home. This has been heart-breaking news for the Trust that has cared for and promoted the instrument for so many years to 200-300 loyal supporters at each show. So sadly, failing a miracle that saves the Hollywood, all our remaining 2015 shows are cancelled and this show will be the last at the Hollywood Cinema. ...and what a fine way to finish, with arguably the finest concert performer today and a frequent visitor to Auckland - the USA's Jelani Eddington. Jelani Eddington is a true consummate musician and over the years, he has become a much-loved entertainer to Auckland audiences, since his first visit in 1996 at the age of twenty-two. Enjoy a true "Pops" program of music from the Light Classics, the 30s and 40s, the Shows and right on up to today – “Pops on Pipes” this certainly is! A great afternoon indeed is in store with this very popular international touring artist. See "close up" on the giant screen, the organist making music on this unique pipe organ complete with its own percussion section of drums, cymbals, piano, harp, xylophone etc. All real "live" percussion instruments - truly a one-man unit orchestra. Some of their greatest shows were "Pirates of Penzance.," "HMS Pinafore," "The Gondoliers," "Iolanthe" and "Yeomen of the Guard." However, it was "The Mikado" which probably became the most well-known. Gilbert unashamedly took the 'micky' out of the British Parliament of the day! Although the story was set in Japan, at that time just opening up to western trade, the public who flocked to the G & S performances, all got the message! During the time of Bach and Handel solo secular cantatas, sung usually by a soprano accompanied by harpsichord and one or more instruments, were the pop music of the day. Such cantatas were performed throughout Europe in private houses, taverns, coffee houses and larger concert rooms with the subject usually being the sweet suffering caused by Cupid, the god of love. Cantatas by Italian composers were particularly popular and the concert features four of these by Lotti, Mancini, Lignani and Aldrovandini as well as sonatas by Handel and Vivaldi. The music is extremely melodic and beautiful and can be immediately appreciated by modern audiences. Hausmusik NZ is a professional chamber music ensemble performing mainly baroque music on period instruments. Performers featured in the Cupid’s Arrows concert are Rita Paczian (mezzo and harpsichord), John Paczian-Green (baroque oboe) and Polly Sussex (baroque cello). Hausmusik New Zealand. Still LAST week's listingsIMPROVISATION JAMS Vitamin S - Pool Night @ WineCellar,
St Kevin's Arcade, K'Rd, Newton. Gold Coin entry. 8pm (Every Monday) A community of artists engaged in the dialogue of creative improvisation. The Vitamin S - pool night was devised as a place where those interested in improvised music and performance could meet, perform, listen to and discuss, and generally interact with all aspects of this complex and largely misunderstood art form. Pool nights are where two randomly selected trios perform improvised music with little or no group preparation (and certainly no rehearsal) beforehand. Workshops are usually the 1st Tuesday of the month ( starting 7:30pm), are a more structured exploration of improvisation. Ideas and techniques are explored and developed in a group setting.
